Thai Thursday and other things

Let me tell you about today.

First, I walked to school, because my phone hates me and didn't tell me that Symone was willing to drive me. So my face was pretty much burned off with the cold by the time I got to work. But then I got to work. And I was productive, which is good, because I'm still a month behind in Jenzabars. Sam and I got hot chocolate. I went to class. Then Paige picked me up and we went to get Thai food. It was delicious. If it is possible to inhale food, then that is what I did. Within 20 minutes, my plate was empty and my tummy was full and happy. I love Thai Thursday/sometime Tuesday. And I am never missing it again.

Anyway, then I went to a work meeting. And Sam and I got in trouble because she tried to draw a hand turkey and the feet came out like an upsidedown umbrella that got blown inside out. and we laughed hysterically. And my boss gave us a look, but she wasn't really that mad.

I then proceeded to hang up Sam's picture in our office, so that everyone could appreciate her work of art.

I came home and took a shower. And got ready. And then Sam came over and we walked to Northgate and got her car. And then we went back to the BYUI center and had dinner with a bunch of snobby AV people. But that's okay, because the food was really good (minus the fruit bars) and then Kathy and Jeremy came and sat with us and we talked about hiring for next semester and acne. And then we went upstairs and answered phones while President Clark did a live webcast. And Sam and I laughed a lot. So that was cool. Then she took me home in time for me to watch Grey's Anatomy with Whitney. And then right after, Symone kidnapped me so I could meet her favorite returned missionaries that used to serve in her ward. And then she came home and Paige came and kidnapped me and we went and froze our little bottoms up while we watched the soccer championship game that her man was coaching. And we laughed some more.

And then I came home to a nice email from my mama bear and the promise of a letter tomorrow. Not too bad of a day, if you ask me. Not too bad of a day.

On being alive

Today, Katie and I spent the morning buzzing around camp on the ATV, unlocking doors to the cabins, opening up waterfront and checking campsites. Then, Mom assigned us the task of visiting each latrine and making sure that they had lime buckets ("if you tinkle, use a sprinkle. if you poop, use a scoop") and cleaning check-lists. The sun was shining and the air was muggy and heavy with a lingering morning haze. I let Kate drive for a bit while I scribbled notes on the clipboard in an inky red pen. We were down at the amphitheater when all of a sudden, out of absolutely nowhere, the skies opened up and literally dumped buckets upon us. It was my turn to drive and Katie was laughing in the back as I gunned the throttle and shot up the hill towards the office; the rain drops hitting my face like a million tiny cold stings that imprinted into my skin. I could feel the water run down my knees and seep into my socks. I could feel it rolling across my checks and into the crevices of my ears as we raced through the wind. My hair was plastered in flat clumps to my forehead and my hands were turning numb in as I gripped the handles in an azure haze of oncoming water. I was laughing uncontrollably as I felt my mascara drip down in bold black lines and as Katie urged me onward in the most perfect summer rainstorm, I felt more alive then I have in months. And it was so beautiful.

Geography Lessons

On the way home tonight, we drove past a dead skunk. My mother said: "Something stinks in Denmark!" (apparently that is an old saying?) The following conversation ensued:

Dad: Do you know where Denmark is?
Mom: It's by Norway and that other guy up there!
Katie: "Germany?"
Mom: "No, up there!"
Me: "I think she means Finland!"

Dad: "Do you know where Morocco is?"
Mom: "Isn't that where people use those shaker things?"
Me: "No, Mom. No."
Mom: "Yeah Huh! Macarenias!"
Dad: "Maracas are used in Mexico..."

Mom: "Holland is in the Netherlands."
Dad: "No."
Mom: "Yeah, it is! Holland! Wooden Shoes."
Ashley: "I thought the Netherlands were islands!"
Dad: "Holland to the Netherlands is like America is to the USA."
Mom: "Right! Holland is the Netherlands!"
Katie: "Where is Denmark?"

I really love my fambly. They make me laugh.

Kevin: "Ugh, this is soooo stupid, why did I even take this class...oh. i should just sniff this cleaner."

Symone (holding up a piece of cloth): What is this for?
Chelsie: "Oh, that's for the heating pad. you can make it wet."
Symone: "....Somehow, putting something wet on something plugged into the wall doesn't sound that appealing to me."
Chelsie: "...Oh. good point."
Symone: "But we can hold on to it."

Erin: "I just want to....shove her under a blanket and hide her somewhere."

Thor the Oscar Fish

I live with the Klenotich sisters, Erin and Anne, who never ever fail to keep my life interesting. Erin has a problem with impulse buying and the following account is the latest trouble we've gotten ourselves into because of it.

The other day, the girls left to go get some french fries from Wendys. Two hours later they came back with a baby tropical fish they dubbed lovingly Thor and plopped him in a cute 1-gallon tank. Impulse buying at it's finest. We, as an apartment, have been talking about getting a fish for some time but were planning on acting on that when we were all back together in September.

Thor has been hanging out at Trish and Russell's for the last few days because no one will be here for a few weeks to take care of him. Yesterday, Trish called Erin to tell us that not only has Thor been eating fishy flakes by the pound, he has been JUMPING out of the water, trying to eat Trish's finger when she wiggles it at him.

(Baby Oscars)

I wake up this morning to: "BAD NEWS BEARS!" being yelled in our living room. I walked out and before I could ask what was going on, both Anne and Erin look up at me from the couch with fear in their eyes: "We have a BIG problem."

Anne and Erin did some research on our new pet this morning (two days AFTER buying him, of course) Turns out: Thor is an Oscar fish, who are typically found in the Amazon. And our two inch little buddy will quickly grow to be 15 inches long or more. Not only that but:

-A large aquarium of at least 70 gallons is required to house a pair of Oscars.
-Oscars have hearty appetites and should only be kept with fish that are the same size or larger; smaller fish soon become a quick snack for the Oscar.
-Captive oscars may be fed prepared fish food designed for large carnivorous fish, crayfish worms, and insects such as flies or grasshoppers
-A very large Oscar could easily exceed 2 pounds in weight.

and oscarfishlover.com was quick to put erin's solutions about just getting a 10-galleon tank a rest:

"If you know anything about the Oscarfish, you will know that they get very big, and they get big in a relatively short space of time. They are also very messy fish, both in their eating and toilet habits. For this reason I would suggest that you set yourself up with the right equipment at the very beginning. I know that a 2 inch Oscar doesn't look anything in a big tank, but believe me, that 2 inch Oscar won't stay 2 inches for very long. Far too many people think they have got time on their hands when purchasing Oscars. They think they can house their little friend in a 10 gallon fish tank for a few months while they think about getting a larger aquarium. I am afraid that is not the case with Oscars. "

so now, not only do we have a man-eating fish in a tank that is already too small for it, we have to figure out what on earth we are going to do with dear little Thor, because we cannot afford to have a 20 galleon fish tank in our apartment! We'll get kicked out if we get caught! Anne and I both think the best solution is to bring Thor back to the store and get a Beta (like we had planned on originally) but Erin is convinced he'll die there.

and no, Erin, putting a box labeled "misc." over the tank when our managers come by is not the winning solution.

lesson learned: impulse buying fish that no one knows about (including the workers at walmart) is never a good idea.
