#7-The Kancamangus Highway
About 2.5 hours north of my hometown, nestled in the heart of the white mountains is the scenic byway called the Kancamangus highway, named after an Native American Chief. It starts in the cutest town ever, North Conway, which is basically New Hampshire's version of Jackson Hole. It's filled with little odds and ends shops, parks and culture. The road starts at the end of the town and then winds its way up, up, up and through the white mountains, along the river. There are no gas stations or stores along the road; just the pavement and the nature. Along the road are countless trail heads and campgrounds and covered bridges, along with scenic lookouts and some of the prettiest sights in all of the white mountains, including the Lower Falls and Sabbaday Falls.
New England is known for their covered bridges, like this one at the beginning of Conway end of the byway
These are the lower falls. I took these at the end of a rainy spring, so the river is running high and fast, but during the summer it's a little bit slower, lower and a lot clearer and one of the best swimming spots ever! The falls are like water slides and there is a very deep basin at the bottom of the falls where you can swim and dive off of big rocks.
Then there are Sabbaday Falls, a beautiful water fall that is about a quarter mile hike off of the highway. It's been there for ever and carved out this deep, smooth gorge in the woods.
and here are the views from the top of the byway!
New Hampshire is beautiful, no?
oh new england. you set my soul on fire.
